The Role of Strategic Thinking in Effective Leadership
Among the requirements of an effective leader is his capacity to understand the things around him and to formulate options for situations that demand such action. These traits only become apparent when strategic thinking is utilized in the decision-making process.
Such kind of thinking management steers the course of organizations because thinking strategically makes reasonable use of labor and financial resources for optimum results, or seize opportunities before these are apparent. With this, there is careful evaluation of all factors prior to execution.
Strategic thinking gives way to the objective evaluation of success. This is because this process scans the what, who, when, where and how aspects of all organizational resources and puts them in the constraints of an agreed timeframe. After all, the organization’s welfare and the employees’ professional development are the major measures of leadership effectiveness.
The Diversity of Leadership Styles
There are several definitions of effective leadership. One definition describes leadership as the capacity to gather the right people and keep them inspired in order to get the right things done. Making the people feel that way is yet another challenge for managers.
The Center for Management and Organization Effectiveness (CMOE) and similar training providers understand the urgency of management to train potential leaders in organizations facing global challenges. Organizations are grooming thinking managers, or men with vision like Peter Drucker, Bill Gates, Tome Peters, Andrew Grove, Jack Welsh, and Warren Buffett.
Putting together all leaders into one category denies the fact that each has unique capabilities and denies them with the opportunity to display their flexibility and creativity. Good thing that CMOE has a handful customized trainings to help respond to this issue.
Some leaders are adept at producing extraordinary results and not in influencing people. This is so because these managers simplify overwhelming issues and translate them into a more simple form.
The best leaders are also those who can foster leadership within the culture. When people under his supervision are capable of expressing their self-leadership, their self-confidence becomes a strong point in their growth towards leadership.
Usually, management success is measured against the leader’s ability to respond to change. Others perceive leadership as the ability to look after the interests of the company in general, and the people, specifically. Today, however, leadership success is seen from the perspective of the community.
The Need to Tailor-Fit Leadership Training Modules
Organizations have different needs. Hence, different leadership styles need to be implemented in different organizations. To develop custom-fit training programs for the different kinds of leaders, the CMOE closely works with their clients.
An effective training program uses real-life situations, eliminates irrelevant topics and direct these towards the attainment of the organization’s objectives.
Programs on employee development, team development, leader development and organizational effectiveness require different training approaches. To custom-fit leadership programs to the particular needs of client, special attention is devoted to the company vision and diversity of human responses to situations and stress in the workplace.
Before organizations seek the help of training providers in coming up with programs on human and leadership development, first they need to examine the balance between potentials of established leaders and the value of teamwork within the company.
