Affiliate marketing is basically a marketing technique in which a single affiliate or more than one affiliate gets rewarded by a business when a customer or visitor comes to the seller's web site as a result of the affiliates actions.

Affiliate marketing also refers to the industry which consists of individuals and companies who carry out this kind of internet marketing technique. These include affiliate networks, in house affiliate managers, affiliate management companies, third party vendors who are specialized in this field and also a numerous different types of publishers and affiliates who are active in promoting the services and products of their respective partners.

Internet marketing and affiliate market have common characteristics to a certain extent. This is because affiliates in some cases use advertising methods which are usually used by businesses in their marketing strategy. Some of these methods are search engine optimization (SEO), email marketing, search engine marketing (SEM), and even display advertising in some cases. But affiliates might also use advertising techniques which are not commonly used by businesses, such as publishing the reviews of the services and products which are being offered by the partner.

It often happens that affiliate marketing is ignored by advertisers. Affiliate Marketing is an online marketing technique which is used to drive traffic from one site to another. Affiliate marketing has a lower profile as compared to advertising through email, search engines, and RSS feeds which are usually preferred by online businesses. But nevertheless affiliate still play a major part in the marketing strategies of online businesses.

The reason why businesses prefer affiliate marketing is that the merchant does not incur any expense and does not have to make a payment until and unless there are any results (not taking into consideration any initial setup cost of course). This is known as the pay for performance model. The Affiliate marketing technique has therefore played a major part in the success of a number of online businesses, the most famous examples being Amazon, the online book retailer. But the fact remains that as compared to display advertising techniques, the affiliate marketing technique is not so easily put into effect.

There are a number of ways in which affiliate marketing can be implemented. Business can run their own personal affiliate programs and use them, while still others prefer to use third party services which are provided by middle men who track the sales or traffic that has been driven to the merchant's site by the affiliate.
