| Consulting an Executive Coach: New York |

There certainly have been moments in my life when I wondered if it would be beneficial for me to hire some sort of executive coach. New York has treated me well, for the most part, in my rise to the top of the business food chain, but there have been times when I felt I had reached a plateau in what I hoped would be a steady progression towards that which I originally set out to do. It happens to a lot of people--you hit the ground running and everything goes so well, and then you fall into a rut in which, no matter how much you spin your wheels, you simply can't get out of it. This is what often happens on the treacherous road that is life. A couple of years ago, I hit a spike in the road, got a flat tire, and had a pretty difficult time of putting on the spare. That's when I finally decided to consult a life coach. New York City is full of executives like myself who consult with life coaches and career coaches, and now I can understand why.
After doing a bit of searching and asking for colleagues' recommendations, I decided on an executive coach with impeccable credentials and years of experience working with senior executives from leading institutions like Sun Microsystems, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Credit Suisse, JP Morgan Chase, Johns Hopkins University and the World Health Organization. Not only did this executive coach (New York City's own Meredith Haberfeld, have the expertise and experience I was looking for, she was also the founder and CEO of her own company, and prior to that had been senior VP of a two hundred million dollar marketing firm. If that's not impressive, I don't know what is. I knew from the get go (and my colleagues had also assured me) that I would be in could hands with this particular life coach. New York City is home to many excellent trainers and coaches, but I felt like I had found the right person for my needs. Not only was she socially intelligent, but she embodied all of the qualities that I had hoped to possess.
Though I won't go into detail as to the specifics of my "plateau," I can generalize by saying that, for the most part, I really wanted a fluidity in the way I managed my day to day affairs, and in particular, how I carried and asserted myself. After all, I am in a very powerful position, and I have a lot of people who look to me for direction. I wanted to have that self-assurance and confidence that my position called for, and I felt like I was lacking that at times. Don't get me wrong, I've always had the skills necessary to do my job (I wouldn't have gotten this far if not), I just felt that my assertiveness was lacking and I couldn't quite adopt that effortlessness that so many execs seem to exude. My hope was that I would learn to fill the shoes I was already wearing, with the help on a career coach. New York and its cutthroat business environment can be ruthless if you don't have something of a Machiavellian attitude.
Probably the most valuable thing I learned about myself from my time with Meredith was that I already had what it takes to live a life that makes me proud. I have everything I need, and recognizing that has helped me to hold my chin up and take on that tactful assertiveness that I lacked before. Now, I feel like I'm in a position to lead, secure and comfortable in my own skin, and aware of the resources that I possess within me. I am so thankful for these life changing discoveries, made possible with help from a superb life coach. New York City is full of people like me who think of pursuing a life coach or a career coach--be it known that I would recommend it to anyone considering it.
