When Viagra was launched ten years ago it marked a breakthrough in the erectile dysfunction treatment. Until the drug was launched it had been thought that as many cases of erectile dysfunction were caused by psychological problems as physiological ones .Until the advent of anti-impotence medications there was, of course, no way to disprove this theory. Then in 1996 the “blue pill” was launched and the fact that erectile dysfunction was now largely treatable lead to a massive re-evaluation of this idea. It was, in fact, shown that between 85 and 95 percent of erectile dysfunction cases were physiological and usually treatable.

It is not surprising, therefore, that in only ten years Viagra has gained such a large profile. Most adults in the Western world would probably be able to tell you what Viagra was and what its purpose was, an impressive feat for any prescription medication.
This would not necessarily be true of the other two prescription anti-impotence treatments that are available, Cialis and Levita. Although they have both been on the market for over 5 years their media profile is not as large as that of Viagra. This is surprising because Cialis in many ways surpasses its precursor Viagra and for many men is a preferable option.

Like all prescription medications, Viagra does come with warnings. It can cause dizziness, nausea and even temporarily affect vision though these side effects wear off as the medication itself leaves the body. These minor side effects, however, might seem pretty inconsequential when one considers the benefits to be gained from taking the drug.
There are, however, several other disadvantages to taking Viagra that are more significant. These are the fact that the drug cannot be taken with any kind of fatty foods, and indeed works best on an empty stomach. The second disadvantage is the more significant one and that is the timescale factor. Viagra has to be taken an hour before sexual intercourse and the effects only last for four hours.
So another drug was developed which, like Viagra, worked by inhibiting PDE5. It was approved by the FDA in the United States on November 21, 2003 and was marketed under the name Cialis.
The distinction of Cialis was the amount of time that it allowed a man to achieve an erection after having taken it. Whilst Viagra was effective for between four and five hours after being absorbed into the bloodstream Cialis could be effective for up to thirty-six hours. On the official website for Cialis this fact is stressed. After all, this is a massive selling point. A man is able to take Cialis with his dinner and should still be able to achieve an erection sufficient for penetration shortly thereafter and still be capable the following night without any additional dosing. It was this reason that Cialis was given the sobriquet ‘the weekend pill’.
Cialis also had the advantage of working more quickly than Viagra. It is more readily absorbed into the bloodstream and can allow an erection in as little as 20 minutes. Unlike Viagra, Cialis could be taken ‘spontaneously’.

Cialis was a huge success and has been used by about 15,000 men participating in clinical trials and over eight million men worldwide. Like Viagra there may be side effects experienced when taking Cialis. The most common of these are headache, indigestion, back pain, muscle aches, flushing and a blocked or runny nose. These are caused by the fact that Cialis, like Viagra cause the body to vasodilate, that is they cause the blood vessels to widen. These symptoms will usually go away after a few hours.

Like Viagra, the American Food and Drug Administration, found that Cialis could cause some visual impairment when taken. Again this is as a result of the body vasodilating. The widening of the blood vessels is the reason why Cialis is so effective in treating erectile dysfunction. Scientists were originally developing PDE5 inhibitors as a treatment for angina. They soon realised that a drug that improved blood flow in the body could also have beneficial effects for men who were suffering from erectile dysfunction. By increasing the flow of blood to the tiny vessels in the penis a man is able to achieve an erection and to sustain it in order to allow penetration. Cialis allows men the confidence to know that, as well as being able to achieve an erection, that they will be able to achieve one for a significantly longer amount of time after having taken the drug then they would if they had taken Viagra.

Cialis does not interact with food and only is effected by alcohol if excessive levels are consumed. For many men, then, Cialis is a choice that better suits their lifestyles than Viagra or Levitra, which has a similar period of duration to Viagra. Cialis is not suitable for every man suffering from erectile dysfunction but for many it has given them back their confidence and time flexibility in having sex.
