'Cannot start Microsoft Outlook' Error in Outlook

After the successful completion of all the tasks, like sending and receiving mails, in MS Outlook, the next day in hoping all will go fine, when you attempt to launch the application, you may get the following error message:

“Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Unable to open the Outlook window. The set folders could not be opened. The server is not available. Contact your administrator if this condition persists.”

Thus you will not be able to start the application for carrying out further tasks.

Reason

The reason for the occurrence of this error message can be any one like:

• The reason could be if you are using MS Office Custom Installation Wizard. In this case if you have specified PST file in the Windows Installer transform (MST file) instead of folder path.
• The PST has got corrupted due to any reason

MST files are created by the Windows Installer to modify the installation and setup of a software package and to facilitate in the design and testing of new programs.

Solution

The resolution runs in two ways depending upon the cause. If this is due to the incorrect specification of path then you need to use the Custom Installation Wizard to edit the MST file. While for the other cause i.e. PST corruption, you need a utility for PST repair.

The inbuilt utility of MS Outlook- scanpst.exe may help you in this matter, but if you encounter the following error message at this time then the situation becomes quite problematic after the scanning of the PST:

“Internal errors were found in this file. They must be repaired for this file to work correctly.”

Clicking on the repair option may also not give you the useful results, as the process may fail. Clicking on the ‘Detail’ option will give you the corresponding details. If this is due respect to the read-only feature of PST then the problem can be resolved by changing this attribute whereas in the else case you require some other mean for ending the PST recovery.
